Spirit of Courage Golf Tournament Rescheduled for September 19th Due to the rain that occurred early on Saturday August 15th, the make-up date is scheduled for September 19th again at Dodge Riverside Golf Course in Council Bluffs. A great day of golf is planned. We will begin with a shot-gun start at 9:00 a.m. Jennie Edmundson Volunteers will start registering participants at 8:00 a.m. Foursomes and individuals can still join in the fun; a limited number of openings are still available. Call the volunteer office for more information, 712-396-6040. Thanks to Todd Archer Hyundai, we will GIVE AWAY A CAR. Fun times will certainly take place; activities are planned for many of the holes. Thanks for Your Support The other activities for the Spirit of Courage weekend went off without a hitch. It was a record breaking turnout for the 2009 Spirit of Courage dinner. Approximately 620 guests started arriving at 6pm, complimentary wine and beer flowed, and biding on silent auction items got everyone in a giving mood. Dave Webber, the beloved “Sports-guy” from NBC served as the Master of Ceremony for the evening. With his great wit and humor the evening’s activities went along smoothly. Scott Hoffman and the culinary staff at Harrah’s out did themselves with the evening’s meal. Preparing and serving chicken and filet of beef for 600 + is no easy feat. Further, the trio of desserts was just right to satisfy even the most discriminating sweet tooth. One was sure to find something they liked in the all auction packages. One of the most sought after was a package with two autographed items by the highly acclaimed performer Billy Joel. This hard to duplicate package is sure to be treasured by the bid winner. Local and National celebrities from Sports, TV and the movies added to the celebrations. One of the celebrities in attendance, Justin Baldoni, a Hollywood star of TV and movies, who has been coming to this event for three years said, “Cancer has touched each one of us.” He too has family members who have had cancer. He shared that he attends this event because; he knows all the money raised is used here in the community. Cliff “Rink” Holy, Carol Reeder, Brandy Jorgensen and Dr. Dennis Jones Sunday’s Poker Tournament took place this year at the Mid-America Center, was enjoyed by all the participants especially those at the final table. Although there was only one actual poker winner, Jennie’s Charitable Cancer Fund was the biggest winner of all, as all the funds raised in the tournament will be used for patients in need of assistance. Sarah Archer, the Poker Tournament Co-chair, said, “Once again the Horseshoe dealers made everything so fun, a big thanks goes out to them and the Mid-America Staff too, we had a great time.” Carol Horner, the Golf Tournament Co-chair, admitted that she was disappointed that the rain postponed the tournament; she added positively, “It spreads out the fun!” Final numbers won’t be calculated until after the golf tournament, but initial calculations all point towards a successful weekend. A very special a thanks to the Sponsors, Spirit of Courage Recipients, Chairpersons, Volunteers, Celebrity Guests, Hospital Staff and Community Supporters for all their help which contributed to the success of this event. |
